Our Story

Abovo42 Corporation is my 4th technology startup. The story of the previous 3 businesses is briefly documented in my LinkedIn profile page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seanfenlon

My previous business – DoublePositive – required a lot of travel. Around 2009, I was introduced to a radically cool technology, TripIt. With TripIt, users/travelers simply forward their travel purchase confirmation emails (e.g. hotel reservations, plane ticket confirmation, rental car confirmations, etc.) to Plans@TripIt.com and TripIt automatically creates a web page consisting of the travel plans scraped from the forwarded emails. This technology blew me away in 2009 and I became a power-user of the service.

The concept of controlling content on a web page vis-à-vis email was intriguing to me and I extended that logic to something novel and non-obvious… publishing all the contents in an email, not just the travel/reservations data. As a website publisher/blogger since 1997 (and knowing the huge amount of friction one must suffer in order to do this), I knew that I personally would be a HUGE user of such a technology if it existed. I searched for such a service but found nothing, however, I was certain that it was being built somewhere – it was just a matter of time. So I waited.

By 2011, I noticed that no such technology or service had emerged. The only technologies I observed that were even directionally-similar were those offered by Youtube, Flickr, Shutterfly, Dropbox, and others where a file could be attached to an email and mailed to a user-specific email address (instead of their normal process of uploading via a web or mobile app) – definitely NOT what I was envisioning.

On Sunday, October 16, 2011 10:36 PM, I emailed myself this idea: http://www.abovo42.com/seanfenlon@gmail.com/22898

In March 2015, DoublePositive was successfully acquired and I retired… For 10-days. ;-)

On April 2, 2015, Abovo42 Corporation was born. I had a vision, a mission, and a crude working prototype. The day of the corporate filing, our attorney asked me who my technical co-founder would be. That very same day, I received an email out of the blue from Chad Mathias – Chad was thinking about the next 10-years. That’s just how the universe works. :-)

I have known Chad for decades – Chad has been my youngest brother’s best friends since grade school. Ironically, DoublePositive had made Chad a senior employment offer in 2012, but his current employer did everything necessary to keep him, but in early April 2015, that era was winding down for Chad.

Chad is an uber-experienced engineer in all aspects of technology, from networking infrastructure to modern architecture and development, to scale-able cloud computing, to mega-data management, and so on.

Chad is especially experienced in web-based content management. At our first lunch meeting on April 5, 2015, I had Chad try the Abovo42 concept:

I wanted Chad to see how simple Internet publishing of any/all content could be if it started with an email. Even though he was being pursued by Google at the time, a short-time later, Chad agreed to be the technical co-founder.

The past is now prologue. The journey has begun. Onward – The Way Up. :-)

RE: Abovo42 Team & Our Story

Just to close out the Tripit part of the story line here…

Tripit was ultimately acquired by Concur in 2011 for $120MM: https://techcrunch.com/2011/01/13/concur-acquires-tripit/

As is the case with many tech startup acquisitions, the product now is a mere shell of it’s former hyper-growth self.

However, there is one NEW feature I observed that I think is brilliant and ABOVO should emulate…

Anywhere on their website that the Email address PLANS@tripit.com occurs, they feature a prominent “Copy Email Address” link near it.

ABOVO should emulate this UI feature across ALL Email addresses on the ABOVO.co website, not just POST@abovo.co :-)
